Justice John Byrne graduated in Arts and Law from the University of Queensland. He also holds the degree of Master of Laws from the University of Michigan.
Justice Byrne commenced practice as a Barrister in 1974. He was appointed Queen’s Counsel in 1982.
In 1989, Justice Byrne was appointed to the Supreme Court of Queensland. As Senior Judge Administrator since 2007, he heads the Trial Division of that Court.
Justice Byrne is a former President of the Australian Institute of Judicial Administration. He now chairs the governing Council of the National Judicial College of Australia. Justice Byrne enlisted in Queensland University Regiment. After being commissioned in 1968, he served 17 years in the Infantry. As a Lieutenant-Colonel, in 1982, he was appointed to command Queensland’s Officer Cadet Training Unit. In 1985, the year he transferred to the inactive reserve, he received the Reserve Force Decoration.
In 2013, Justice Byrne became an Officer of the Order of Australia (General Division) for distinguished service to the judiciary and to the law.
